Once upon a time, I hated February. Like loathed it. I mean, even the people who invented the calendar must have hated it since they gave it the least number of days of all the months of the year.

I know you’re thinking – aw, cute, that’s a really obnoxiously touching story about giving money to those in need.
No.
Wrong.
First and foremost, please know that I don’t obsessively follow the royal family. Seriously. But a picture of Prince Harry will always catch my eye scroll through my news feed or the actual news. While every other woman in the English-speaking world is eyeing Prince whatever-his-name-is, I’m oogling the little red-haired, renegade brother.
I want to touch on the path our free time takes. You remember free time, right? That’s the time we squeeze in between work and sleep…and chores and errands and running the kids everywhere? I specifically want to talk about putting your weekends on a path where free time actually feels like free time.
True story - I really hated reading growing up. Like from the time I learned to read until about 22, it was torture. I was (am) a slow reader, so it took me forever to get through books. It was just not fun for me.
Whether we’re in our 20s or 50s, we look up from our company-issued, laminated office desk and try to remember the passion our 20-year-old self had for the job we chose. When is it “too late” to change directions? Is it ever “too late”?
I’d like to hunker down and focus a bit – specifically, about the paths we find ourselves on. Each week, you’ll see a new post centered around this topic.
Though I knew my career story would resonate with women in at the dinner, I felt required to talk about joy in God terms. It was a church after all. The only thing was, I had NO idea what God thought about joy. Did the Bible even talk about joy? I was raised on church doctrine, not the Bible, so I didn’t know the answer.
I’m going to do something a little different today. I want to share a few thoughtful gift options for this (or any) season. And the very cool thing about these gifts is, get this…When you buy these gifts, you’re ALSO supporting an awesome cause.
Whaaaaat? You get to love on your family and friends thoughtfully AND give to a worthy organization? Sign. Me. Up.
Okay, before we get too far down this blog path, I’ve got to come clean about something. This is like the single mom telling a guy on the third date that she has a kid. And she needs to tell him before they go any further…
So I accepted the role…I took the money. I took the bigger title. I took the nicer office. I was going to prove working moms could do it all without missing a beat.
You can guess how this went.
It. Was. Terrible.
With mixed emotions, we decided yes. Yes, we would make this crazy choice. Yes to less activities. Yes to fewer stores. Yes to shorter commutes. Yes to less.
The journey of a working mom leaving her career, choosing joy, and slowing down in a high-speed world.
